How Much Does A Metal Garage Cost? 2026 Price Guide

A standard metal garages cost starts around $6,000 and can goes up to $50,000 for a large custom steel garage including delivery and installation. The cost depends on size, roof style, customization options and the wind and snow load your area requires. A 24×30 metal garage cost between $8,000 to $12,000. A larger 30×50 triple-wide garage cost around $15,000 to $17,000.

Per square foot: $11 and $20 per square foot for the structure itself including delivery and installation. Larger buildings usually cost less per square foot even though the total price is higher… a 30×60 garage costs more than a 24×30, but not three times more.

These costs cover the structure, delivery and installation. It does not cover the concrete slab, permits, electrical work or any additional work.

Here is the full breakdown of metal garage pricing, so you know what to expect before you get one for yourself.

What’s Included in the Price and What’s Not

The price you see on a metal garage includes-

  • The steel structure, engineered and certified for your location
  • Delivery to your site
  • Professional installation

It usually does NOT include-

  • Concrete slab- A 24×24 slab can cost you around $2,800 to $6,400 depending on your region, slab thickness and how much site grading is needed.
  • Permits- Fees range starts from $100 in some rural counties to $500 to $1,500+ in areas with stricter building codes. Anything over 200 square feet usually requires a permit, and your local building department can tell you exactly what’s needed before you order.
  • Electrical work- if you plan to wire the garage for lighting or power tools.
  • Insulation- if you want the space usable year-round.

Always ask for an itemized quote before you commit, so you know exactly what’s covered.

What Actually Changes Your Price

  1. Size

Bigger buildings cost more in total but less per square foot. A 24×30 and a 30×40 are closer in price than most people expect… the framing and labor costs don’t scale one-to-one with square footage, so the jump in usable space is often worth more than the price difference suggests.

  1. Roof Style

Vertical roof panels shed water and snow better than horizontal roof styles, and they cost a bit more as a result. In areas with heavy snowfall, the extra cost usually pays for itself in reduced maintenance and better long-term durability.

  1. Steel Gauge

Steel gauge measures thickness… the lower the number, the thicker (and stronger) the steel. Heavier-gauge framing costs more upfront but holds up better under wind and snow load, which matters most if you are in a region with serious weather.

  1. Wind and Snow Load Requirements for Your Location

This is the single biggest reason two people can order what looks like the same garage and get two different prices. Every state… sometimes every county… has its own required wind speed and snow load ratings for structures over a certain size. A garage built for a coastal hurricane zone needs different bracing and anchoring than the same size garage built for a low-risk inland area, and that difference shows up directly in the price.

  1. Doors, Windows and Add-Ons

Roll-up doors, walk-in doors, windows, lean-tos, and insulation are typically priced as add-ons. They are not compulsory.. but they are worth pricing out up front so your final number doesn’t come as a surprise.

Metal Garage vs. Wood Garage: Which Costs Less?

Metal generally wins on both upfront cost and cost over time. A comparable wood-frame garage costs more to build and requires repainting, rot repair and pest treatment over the years… costs a steel structure doesn’t carry. Steel garages come with a 20-year rust-through warranty and don’t need repainting on any regular cycle.

For most buyers prioritizing cost, speed of installation and low maintenance, metal is the more preferable choice.

How to Pay for a Metal Garage

Most buyers use one of two options-

  • Standard financing- A down payment followed by fixed monthly payments, usually with a credit check involved.
  • Rent-to-own- No credit check, month-to-month terms and the option to pay off the balance early without a penalty.

Both options let you spread the cost out instead of paying the full amount upfront. Check our financing details and rent-to-own terms for specifics.

How to Get an Accurate Price

Because wind and snow load requirements are tied to your exact location, the only way to get a precise number is to price your building for your specific address. Starting prices on a website are a useful reference point, but they are not your final quote.

You can always get an estimate by using the 3D design tool, build your garage with your actual size, roof style and add-ons to see the approx. costing or you can always call our garage experts with your zip code for a same-day quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How much does a 24×30 metal garage cost?

A basic 24×30 metal garage can cost you around $8,000 to $12,000 installed, depending on your location’s wind and snow load requirements.

  1. Does the price include the concrete slab?

No. Concrete and site grading are priced separately, depending on your location. You will need to hire a separate contractor for the concrete slab work.

  1. Why do metal garage prices vary by state?

Every state and sometimes every county has its own required wind speed and snow load rating for structures over a certain size. Buildings certified for higher-risk areas need stronger framing and anchoring, which costs more.

  1. Is a metal garage cheaper than a wood garage?

Yes..! both to build and to maintain over time. Wood can have a slight edge on insulation value and resale in some markets, but metal wins on total cost.

  1. Do I need a permit for a metal garage?

In most areas, yes. Permit fees range from under $100 to $1,500+ depending on your local building department.

  1. Can I finance a metal garage with bad credit?

Rent-to-own programs typically don’t require a credit check and offer month-to-month terms with no penalty for paying off early.

  1. How much does insulation add to the cost?

Insulation is priced as an add-on and varies based on the type (double-bubble, vinyl-backed fiberglass or spray foam) and the size of the building. Share your requirements with our garage experts and they will guide you with the right type of insulation and costing.

  1. What’s the cheapest way to buy a metal garage?

Standard sizes with a horizontal roof style and minimal add-ons (fewer doors, no insulation) will always come in cheapest. Custom sizes, vertical roofs, and extra doors or windows add cost. But make sure in order to get cheap, do not compromise on the permits, local wind and snow load requirements!
