Metal Barns

Metal Barns

If you’ve been storing hay in a leaking shed, parking tractors outside through winter, or trying to figure out how to give your horses a proper shelter, a metal barn fixes all of that in one structure. Steel barns are built for farm and property use. They don’t rot, they don’t attract pests and they don’t need repainting every few years the way wood does.

At American Metal Garages, we build custom metal barns for farmers, ranchers, and farm property owners. Every barn is fully customizable, you pick the size, roof style, doors and layout. Delivery and installation are included, no extra cost. Get your metal barn at the best prices.

Barn Styles! Which One Is Right for You?

Not every barn works the same way. The roof style you choose affects how the building looks, how it handles rain and snow, and how much clearance you get inside. Here’s what each style means in practice.

Vertical Roof Barns

Vertical roof panels run top to bottom instead of side to side. That means rain and snow slide off the roof rather than sitting on it. If you are in an area that gets heavy rainfall or snow, vertical roof is worth the small extra cost. It also gives the building a cleaner, more finished look.

Straight Roof Barns (Continuous Roof)

Straight roof barns have a low-pitch roof that runs the full length of the building without a ridge break. They work well for wider structures and give you maximum interior headroom across the full span. Popular choice for equipment storage where you need clearance for tall machinery.

Carolina Metal Barns

The Carolina barn is a classic barn layout, a center structure with lean-tos on each side. The lean-tos can be open like a carport, partially enclosed or fully walled depending on what you need. It’s one of the most flexible barn styles because you can use each section differently. Main bay for tractors or hay storage, lean-tos for livestock or smaller equipment. You get three functional zones in one structure.

A-Frame Roof Barns

The A-frame (also called boxed-eave) roof has a peaked center ridge that gives the barn a traditional look closer to a house roof. It handles water runoff better than a flat or low-pitch roof and is a popular choice when appearance matters alongside function on properties where the barn is visible from the road or near residential buildings.

What Can You Use a Metal Barn For?

Most buyers come to us with one specific need… horses, hay, a tractor but end up using the barn for more than they originally planned. That’s because a well-sized steel barn gives you more flexible space than almost any other structure at the same price. Here are some of the most common uses for metal barns:
Common uses we see across our service area-

Metal Barns Vs. Wooden Barns

Wood barns have been around for centuries, but they come with real ongoing costs that steel doesn’t. Here’s the honest comparison-

  • Wood barns need repainting or re-staining every few years. They are vulnerable to rot in wet climates and most of our service area gets significant rainfall. Termites and rodents cause structural damage that compounds over time. A 20-year-old wood barn often needs significant repair work to stay usable.
  • Metal barns don’t rot or attract pests. These structures are made from galvanized steel, which helps protect them from corrosion and requires minimal maintenance. All you need to do is clean them occasionally and check for scratches that could expose the bare metal. The upfront cost can be comparable to wood, while the long-term maintenance costs are often lower. With proper care, metal barns can last for decades without requiring much maintenance

Metal Barn Pricing - What Affects Your Quote?

Metal barn pricing varies based on your requirement and location. A standard 20×35 metal barn can cost between $19,000 to $25,000 with doors and windows. The factors that affects the pricing are-

  • Size– width and length are the biggest drivers
  • Roof style– vertical costs slightly more than regular or A-frame
  • Your location– wind and snow load certifications vary by state and county, and buildings in high-wind or heavy-snow areas require stronger engineering
  • Doors and openings– more doors, wider openings, and taller clearances add to the cost
  • Insulation and ventilation– priced as add-ons, worth including if you’ll work inside regularly

The best way to get an accurate number is to call us and share what size of barn you need, intended use and zip code. Our barn expert will help you with prices.

Metal Barns FAQs

Can I use a metal barn for horses?

Yes, a Carolina barn layout works well for horses. The lean-to sections give you covered stall space while the main structure handles hay and feed storage. Make sure you factor in door height and width for easy horse movement and consider ventilation if the barn will be closed up regularly.

Do I need a permit for a metal barn?

In most areas, yes! Permit requirements depend on your county and the size of the structure. We provide engineer-certified drawings, which most counties require as part of the permit application. Check with your local building department before ordering.

What foundation do I need for my metal barn?

For most barns, we suggest a concrete slab, as it is the most reliable option. 4 inches thick for standard use and 6 inches for heavier loads or larger structures. A properly prepared, level site also makes installation faster and cleaner.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. We offer standard financing with fixed monthly payments, and rent-to-own for customers who prefer no credit check and flexible terms. Call our experts for current rates and options.

Can I add lean-tos or expand the barn later?

Yes..!! Lean-tos can be added to most barn structures. If you think you might expand later, let us know when you are ordering so we can factor that into the initial build.
